Zombies Ate My Neighbors, also known as Zombies in PAL regions, is a top-down action shooter game developed by LucasArts and published by Konami, and released in 1993 on the Super Nintendo and Genesis platforms.
The game spawned a sequel, Ghoul Patrol, although it was published by JVC instead. Both games are set to be rereleased as a compilation pack under the name Zombies Ate My Neighbors and Ghoul Patrol for the PC, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One on June 29, 2021.
Plot[]
An evil scientist made a dirty experiment and monsters have invaded the world. It's now up to Zeke and Julie to rescue the people, destroy the monsters and the evil scientist behind this and save the world.
Gameplay[]
The players can choose to take control of two characters, Zeke or Julie, in this top-view action shooter game. They will fight zombies, aliens, vampires, mummies, werewolves, blobs, lizard men and all kind of monsters themed after classic horror films, while rescuing their careless (and apparently oblivious) neighbors. It will take them through more than 50 levels to complete this task, which include cities, garden mazes, shopping malls, football fields, catacombs, ruins, ancient Egyptian pyramids, among others.
To fight the enemies, various "weapons" are at the players' disposal (most of which are simple everyday items), ranging from water guns, bazookas, explosive soda cans, dishes, silverware, lollipops, lawnmowers, roller skates, tomatoes, and many more. Other items include potions, some of which have unexpected effects, and keys that can unlock doors.
Each level features a certain number of neighbors to rescue. Once all of them are rescued, an exit door will spawn leading to the next stage.
Trivia[]
- The rotating red circles on the title screen apparently are a reference to the opening of the 1958 science fiction horror film The Blob.
- Certain monsters reference the Castlevania series, especially the boss Vlad Belmont.
