Popolon (ポポロン Poporon?) is the main protagonist of the Knightmare series. He is a knight from Ancient Greece who fought against the evil demon Hudnos, who had abducted Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love. Popolon and Aphrodite later fought side by side against the evil priest Galious, who had invaded their castle in the Greek Kingdom.
In addition to the Knightmare series, Popolon has made a few guest appearances in some Konami crossover games.
History[]
Galious was an evil priest who sought to cover the world in darkness. However, he needed a castle to carry out the dark ritual for this task, so he summoned the demon Hudnos, King of the Underworld, and ordered him to kidnap Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love, in order to make Popolon –the Greek Kingdom's bravest knight and defender– go in her search and leave the realm unprotected.
Hudnos succeeded in abducting Aphrodite and trapped her inside the Nightmare Castle. Unable to find the castle by himself, Popolon ended up exhausted and fell asleep, having nightmares of monsters threatening Aphrodite. In one of his dreams, however, the goddess Hera appeared to him and told him that Hudnos hid the Nightmare Castle beyond Mount Atos, urging him to follow the trail left by Aphrodite and rescue her. And thus, Popolon set forth to Mount Atos and finally found the Nightmare Castle where Hudnos was hiding. Popolon succeeded in defeating Hudnos and rescued Aphrodite, taking her back with him to the Greek Kingdom.
Upon returning home, however, Popolon found the place desolated and the Greek Castle overrun with monsters. It was then when he discovered that the whole kidnapping was just a ruse to drive him away from the castle so Galious could invade it. On his part, the evil Galious set his way toward Heaven and kidnapped the yet unborn son of Popolon and Aphrodite. When the two heroes learned of Galious's evil plan, they broke into the castle and explored it thoroughly –defeating all of Galious's demonic minions that got in their way– to save their future son and retake the castle, receiving the aid of the gods on this quest.
They eventually found Galious's secret chamber and confronted him. They succeeded in defeating him and finally freed the Greek Kingdom from the dark priest's evil influence once and for all.

- Parodius (1988 - MSX): Popolon appears as a guest playable character in this Konami crossover side-scrolling shooting game. The story states that after rescuing Aphrodite, Popolon enlisted to aid Tako fight the evil Bug, who was eating everyone's dreams.
- Hai no Majutsushi (1989 - MSX2): Both Popolon and Aphrodite appear as guest playable characters and are the main protagonists of this Konami crossover mahjong game.
- Pixel Puzzle Collection (2018 - Mobile phones): A nonogram puzzle featuring Popolon appears in this Konami crossover puzzle game.
