Lode Runner is an action game, originally developed by Douglas E. Smith and published by Broderbünd Software in 1983 for home computers. Smith would license his game for various other companies, who made ports for Japanese computers and consoles, all of which were allowed to make sequels of their own. Some of these companies include Irem, which made versions of the game for Arcades, and Hudson Soft, which made versions for consoles. Hudson's Lode Runner games were connected with their own Bomberman series, often featuring the Bombermen as playable characters or enemies.
The series' rights now belong to Tozai games, which continues to make new sequels to the series.
