Double Dribble is a portable handheld LCD game produced by Konami and released in 1989 in Japan, North America and the PAL region. It is based on the original 1986 game, Double Dribble.
Gameplay[]
A simplified recreation of a basketball match consisting on four periods of two minutes each. The game can be played by one or two players in an alternating manner, each playing a period and then shifting to the other player to play their part of that same period (for a total of eight periods). The screen's layout only consists on the hoop on the left side of the screen and its surrounding areas, including the free throw line and up to the three point line. The player starts on the right side of the screen, outside the three point line, and two players from the opposing team will try to impede him from scoring. The player has to dribble his way through both opponents to get near the hoop and this way have a better chance to throw the ball and score. The opponents will constantly reposition themselves to try to block the player's advance. If the player stays too long in front of an opponent, this will steal the ball from his hands and they'll have to try again from the beginning. There is no limit at how many times the player can try to score after the ball has been stolen from him.
Above the hoop is displayed an arrow pointing down that progressively draws toward the bottom, acquiring a darker tone as it does so; the more at the bottom it is, the higher the chance the player will have for the ball to enter the hoop after being thrown.
Besides the standard ball shots, the player can also attempt to dunk the ball into the hoop by evading and moving past both opponents and heading directly toward it, although the position of the arrow will also affect if the ball enters or if it bounces off the backboard.
The scoring system differs from that of the real game:
- A successful shot from two steps away from the hoop (just inside the three point line) is worth 1 point.
- A successful shot from one step away from the hoop is worth 2 points.
- A successful dunk is worth 5 points.
- It isn't possible to shoot from outside the three point line.
